Daniel Merrill - Violin.
Daniel followed in the footsteps of his Grandfather, taking up the violin at the age of 7, and has had a passion for the instrument ever since. As a teenager he studied quartets, and gained a wealth of performance experience at Benslow Music Trust in Hitchin, as well as performing with a range of pop and folk ensembles, and completing several tours of Europe.
Moving to Colchester to study for his BA Hons degree in Music in 1998, Daniel spent three years under the tutelage of Mark Messenger (Head of Strings, RCM), and specialised in composition.
It was during his studies at Colchester Institute that he formed the Dead Rat Orchestra, in which he writes and performs a unique form of improvised folk music, and with whom he has recorded and toured internationally.
A highly active musician he writes, performs and records regularly with a large number of ensembles across a broad range of genres. His compositions have been performed internationally, and he is regularly commisioned to write and perform for theatre ensembles.
Daniel enjoys eating the homemade treats that Ellie and Belinda bring to rehearsals, and is feeling very guilty about not providing any. (Next time they are on me!)
